Google Play Screenshot Sizes & Feature Graphic Guide
Everything Android developers need to prepare compliant preview assets for the Google Play Console: exact resolution rules, 1024×500 feature graphic safe zones, aspect ratio limits, and how to avoid upload rejections.
Google Play Screenshot Dimensions & Rules
Google Play gives developers flexibility in canvas dimensions, but enforces strict format, aspect ratio, and boundary constraints across phone, tablet, and Chromebook slots. Official Google Play guidelines define the technical boundaries:
| Device / Asset | Recommended Size | Allowed Range | Aspect Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone Portrait | 1080 × 1920 px | 320 px to 3840 px per side | 9:16 (Max 2:1 ratio) |
| Phone Landscape | 1920 × 1080 px | 320 px to 3840 px per side | 16:9 (Max 2:1 ratio) |
| 7-inch Tablet | 1200 × 1920 px | 320 px to 3840 px per side | 16:10 or 9:16 |
| 10-inch Tablet | 1600 × 2560 px | 320 px to 3840 px per side | 16:10 or 9:16 |
| Feature Graphic | 1024 × 500 px | Exact dimensions mandatory | ~2.05:1 (Mandatory asset) |
The 2:1 Aspect Ratio Limit: Google Play requires that the longest side of a screenshot is no more than twice the length of the shortest side. A composition taller or wider than 2:1 will be rejected during upload in Google Play Console.
Format & Alpha Channels: Images must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha channel (zero transparency). Files must not exceed 8 MB each.
The 1024 × 500 Feature Graphic: Safe Zones & Policies
A feature graphic is required to publish or update an app on Google Play. It appears in store search banners, category features, and promotional placements across phone, TV, and Chromebook surfaces.
Feature Graphic Design Rules
- Keep vital copy in the center 800 × 400 zone: Google crops edges differently depending on screen aspect ratio and user device. Keep logos and headlines at least 100 px from the left/right and 50 px from the top/bottom.
- No pricing or ranking claims: Text like "$4.99", "Free for a limited time", or "Rated #1 Best App" violates Google Play listing policies.
- No store badges or CTA buttons: Do not add "Install Now" buttons, Google Play logos, or simulated app store badges.
- Complement your icon: The feature graphic is often displayed adjacent to your app icon. Avoid repeating the app icon as the sole graphic element.
The 4-Screenshot Rule for Store Discovery
Google Play requires a minimum of 2 screenshots to publish an app. However, meeting the bare minimum damages organic discovery. Google’s store algorithms mandate:
- At least 4 screenshots uploaded for each supported device form factor.
- Minimum 1080 px resolution on the shortest side.
- Apps meeting this threshold qualify for featured carousel placements, large-card search highlights, and "Recommended for You" store sections.
Common Play Console Rejection Gotchas
- Alpha Channel Error: Exporting PNGs from design tools often preserves transparent background layers. Google Play Console rejects transparent files immediately. App Listing Screenshots flattens and exports fully compliant PNGs without alpha channels.
- Unrepresentative Gameplay or UI: Screenshots that show stylized illustrations without displaying actual app UI violate policy. The store listing must show real, recognizable in-app interactions.
- Unreadable Headlines on Mobile: A screenshot that looks clear on a 27-inch desktop monitor can be illegible on a 6-inch phone screen. Keep headlines under 8 words and use bold font weights.
How to Build Google Play Assets in App Listing Screenshots
- Select your preset: Open the studio and choose the Google Play Phone (1080 × 1920) or Feature Graphic (1024 × 500) preset.
- Upload your raw screens: Drag in raw Android UI captures. Arrange them in a single frame, side-by-side, or stacked.
- Add benefit copy: Write a concise headline focusing on what the user accomplishes on that specific screen.
- Export crisp PNGs: Download flattened, 24-bit compliant PNGs ready for immediate upload to Google Play Console.
